WebP or AVIF?
Both pack photos much better than JPEG. The question is not which one is technically superior, but which one fits your website.
| WebP | AVIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Savings compared to JPEG | etwa 25–35 % | etwa 40–50 % |
| Browser support | Practically complete | Very good, not seamless |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Coding time | kurz | significantly longer |
| Tools and Hosters | Everywhere | Not partly yet |
The short answer
Take WebP. It is displayed by all common browsers, any editing program can write it, and the profit over JPEG is already significant. AVIF is worthwhile if you play out a lot of large photos and the extra ten to fifteen percent weight falls.
Both at the same time
With the pictureYou can offer multiple formats; the browser takes the first one it understands, order: AVIF, then WebP, then JPEG as a fallback level.
